Heat pump and geothermal heating
A heat pump can be a good alternative to oil-fired or gas-fired boilers or to electric heating, as it is both an environmentally friendly and a cheaper form of heating.
The three most common heat pumps are:
Ground-source heat pump, liquid-to-water system, (geothermal heating), where the heat is transported from a ground loop. The heat is distributed indoors via a water-driven system such as radiators. This is a good solution when replacing an oil-fired boiler in standard homes.
Air-source heat pump, air-to-water system, where the heat is extracted from the air outside and is distributed indoors via a water-driven system. This solution is best suited to low-energy homes and buildings that require little heat.
Air-source heat pump, air-to-air system, where the heat is also extracted from the air outside, but is distributed indoors via an air-blast system. This solution is best suited to holiday homes or to partially replace electric heating.
