Electricity consumption

Since 2003 consumers in Denmark have been able to choose which supplier of electricity they want to use. This free choice comprises all the electricity suppliers that buy electricity on the electricity market and sell it to consumers. However, you cannot choose which company will actually transport the electricity to your home, as you are tied to the local grid company via the grid, and it is this company that owns and maintains the cables in your area.

If you do not make an active choice as to which power company you want to use, you will automatically receive electricity from the local electricity supplier who has the electricity supply obligation in your area.

In Denmark, electricity is primarily produced from coal, natural gas, oil, wind power and biomass (e.g. straw and wood pellets). Among these five types of fuel, only wind power and biomass are considered CO2 neutral. Ask your electricity supplier if they have a green alternative.
