Electricity supply

The electricity grid transports and distributes power from production plants to consumers and can in many ways be compared to the Danish road grid.

The transmission grid of 400-132 kV corresponding to motorways, dual carriageways and major primary roads - the backbone of the electricity supply system.  The 60-30 kV grid corresponding to smaller primary roads and main roads, and the 20-6 kV grid corresponding to minor roads. Finally 0.4 kV, the current that most consumers receive, corresponding to residential roads.

The Danish electricity market has been liberalised, and since 1 January 2003 consumers have been able to choose their electricity supplier freely. Today the electricity grid is independent and may be used by all electricity producers.

Energinet.dk is the owner of the overall infrastructure and is responsible for the smooth operation of the electricity supply system and electricity market.
